A Few Good Finds: Third Edition
Noteworthy Substack pieces
This month I’d like to offer you a recommendation of a piece by my friend, Oakley Meredith, that is as good as any personal prose I’ve read this year.
I also suggest that you read anything by the marvelous Larisa Rimerman .
Boze at Bibliol College produced this solid review of Dante translations.
I was honored to have several interactions with Sherman Alexie last week. I taught a novel by him that won the National Book Award several years ago. Make sure to read his work.
Speaking of big names on Substack for whom I have a great deal of respect, if you haven’t subscribed to David Bentley Hart yet, you should do so without delay.
As I said last week, one of the things that I appreciate about Substack is that there is an air of leisure, in the classical sense. Yes, of course, there are pockets of grifting and fanaticism, and hack writing. But in general, there is a healthy atmosphere of interest in art, poetry, philosophy, good food, and humor. I like it here.
I will leave you with a truthful quote shared by one of my Substack spiritual “siblings.”
This is from the splendid Hannah Elizabeth (“That "Wodehouse Chick”):
“There is no surer foundation for a beautiful friendship than a mutual taste in literature.”
P.G. Wodehouse
